In reality, prolonged exposure to diffused light near a window is sufficient to cause cards to fade and yellow. Even indoors, ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate window glass, causing irreversible damage to the card's ink over time. If a display case is positioned near a window, you must ensure it features a UV-protective coating or is made of UV-resistant material, or apply a UV-blocking film to the window.

Some stands prioritize aesthetics over stability, featuring flimsy bases; if your cat walks by or you accidentally bump the table, it can turn into a disaster scene of cards tumbling to the floor. A sturdy structure, a low center of gravity, and secure mounting are far more important than appearance.

Inferior plastics or adhesives can release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds); if trapped in an enclosed space next to a card case for an extended period, these substances may trigger a chemical reaction, causing the case to fog up or even damaging the card's surface. At a minimum, you should choose products that are acid-free and clearly state their UV-blocking rate.

Dead wrong—an overly tight fit is far more damaging than a loose one.

Many collectors like to force cards into 9-pocket binder pages, believing that a "snug fit" prevents shifting. However, if the pocket is too tight, the card edges will repeatedly rub against the cut edges of the plastic sleeve during insertion and removal. This creates visible "whitening" along the edges—flaws that are instantly exposed under the microscopes used by PSA graders.

The correct approach: There should be a sense of "resistance" (or damping) when the card is inserted. It shouldn't slide out on its own when held vertically, and there should be no rattling sound when shaken gently; yet, it should still be removable without requiring forceful tugging.

Binders are not vaults; they can be "slow killers"

Some collectors have dug up foil cards stored a decade ago, only to be shocked to find that nearly a hundred once-beautiful cards had lost their sheen; viewed at an angle, they were covered in unsightly blemishes—looking even worse than standard non-foil cards.

The reason is simple: binders are not airtight. Every time you flip through the pages, dust and moisture get inside, and long-term storage actually accelerates the cards' deterioration.

The correct approach: Foil cards and high-value cards must be placed in protective sleeves before being put into a binder. If the binder slots are too narrow to accommodate the sleeves, it is better to store the cards separately than to leave them "naked" (unprotected).

Excessively low humidity turns cards into "potato chips."

Many collectors stuff their storage boxes with excessive amounts of desiccant, believing that "drier is safer." However, paper products have an optimal humidity range; if dehumidified too aggressively, cards become extremely brittle and snap with the slightest bend—a fate even worse than moisture damage.

The correct approach: The ideal storage environment for paper collectibles is a temperature of 18–22°C and a relative humidity of 45–55%. Place a thermo-hygrometer inside the storage box to monitor conditions and prevent over-dehumidification.
